You can use any of these modifier keys alone as your trigger:

Left / Right Command✓ (mapped to Win key)
Left / Right Option✓ (mapped to Alt key)
Left / Right Control
Control (either side)
Left / Right Shift

Function Keys

Any function key from F1 through F19 can be used as a standalone trigger.

Other Standalone Keys

  • Bracket keys: [, ]
  • Minus, Equal, Backslash
  • Insert, Scroll Lock (Windows only)

Key Combinations

Combine a modifier with another key for a custom shortcut:

Two-key combos — modifier + key:

  • Format: Modifier+Key (e.g., Cmd+J, Option+K, Ctrl+F5)
  • Supported modifiers: Cmd, Option/Alt, Ctrl, Shift, Fn
  • Supported keys: Any letter (A–Z) or function key (F1–F19)

Three-key combos — two modifiers + key, or modifier + two letters:

  • Modifier+Modifier+Key (e.g., Ctrl+Shift+A, Cmd+Shift+F5)
  • Modifier+Letter+Letter (e.g., Cmd+A+B, Ctrl+X+Y)

Mouse Buttons (Windows only)

On Windows, you can also trigger recording with mouse buttons:

  • Middle button — mouse scroll wheel click
  • Button 4 — back button (side button)
  • Button 5 — forward button (side button)

Translation Shortcut

In addition to the recording shortcut, Typeoff has a separate translation shortcut for on-demand translation. By default it's Cmd+J (macOS) or Alt+J (Windows). You can customize it in Settings → Recording → Translation Shortcut.

The translation shortcut cannot be the same as the recording shortcut — Typeoff will warn you if there's a conflict.

For more details, see Language Settings → Translation Shortcut.

Tips

  • Choose a key you don't use frequently in your daily apps
  • Fn (macOS) and Right Ctrl (Windows) are recommended because they're rarely used by other software
  • If your shortcut conflicts with another app, Typeoff will still capture it — but you may want to choose a different key to avoid disruptions
  • Key combinations (like Ctrl+Shift+T) reduce the chance of accidental triggers
