Typeoff Docs

Introduction

Typeoff is a voice input method for macOS and Windows that instantly converts your speech into text at the cursor position.

What is Typeoff?

Typeoff is a cross-platform voice input method. Press and hold the trigger key (Fn on macOS, Right Ctrl on Windows), speak, and your words are instantly transcribed and inserted wherever your cursor is — in any app.

Unlike traditional speech-to-text tools that require you to open a separate window, Typeoff works like an input method: it sits in the background and activates only when you need it.

Key Highlights

  • Instant insertion — text appears right at your cursor, no copy-paste needed
  • Works everywhere — compatible with any app that accepts text input: email, chat, documents, code editors, and more
  • Two recording modes — hold-to-record for quick input, or tap-to-toggle for longer dictation
  • Cloud & local ASR — cloud transcription for best accuracy, or local Whisper model for offline privacy
  • AI enhancement — automatically refines grammar, removes fillers, and formats your text
  • Multilingual — supports 60+ languages with automatic language detection
  • Customizable trigger key — use Fn, function keys, modifier keys, key combinations, or even mouse buttons

How It Works

  1. Press the trigger key (Fn on macOS, Right Ctrl on Windows)
  2. Speak naturally — Typeoff records and streams your audio
  3. Release the key — your speech is transcribed, refined by AI, and inserted at the cursor

The entire process takes just seconds. A small floating indicator at the bottom of your screen shows the current recording status.

Platform Support

Available on macOS and Windows. The default trigger key is Fn on macOS and Right Ctrl on Windows.
