Voice Input
Learn about Hold and Tap-to-Toggle — two ways to trigger voice input.
Overview
Typeoff's voice input is triggered by a shortcut key (Fn on macOS, Right Ctrl on Windows). There are two ways to use it, and they work simultaneously — no need to switch between them.
Hold Mode
Press and hold the trigger key, speak, then release to stop.
- Best for: Quick input — a sentence or a short paragraph
- How it works: Hold the key down and the app enters hold mode. Release the key to end recording.
Tap-to-Toggle Mode
Tap the trigger key once to start, tap again to stop.
- Best for: Slightly longer input where you want to speak hands-free
- How it works: Quickly tap the trigger key to start recording. Tap it again to stop.
How the App Decides
Typeoff automatically detects your intent based on how you press the key: a quick tap activates tap-to-toggle, while holding the key down activates hold mode. No configuration needed — both modes are always available.
Recording Indicator
During recording, a compact floating capsule appears at the bottom of your screen showing a microphone icon, animated waveform bars, and a timer. When processing, it switches to a spinner with a progress bar.
The indicator never steals focus and works across multiple displays and fullscreen apps. You can enable cancel and finish buttons in settings for easier control.
Sound Feedback
Typeoff plays a short sound when recording starts and stops. You can turn this off in Settings → Sound Feedback.
Looking for Long Recording?
Voice input is designed for quick text entry at the cursor. If you need to record meetings, lectures, or interviews, see Long Recording.
